Continuing with the same group lineup as on Rough and Ready, Jeff Beck Group was slagged off by critics for Steve Cropper's admittedly lazy production. However, several of the songs hold up masterfully, including the skronky "Ice Cream Cakes," the superlative redo of Don Nix's "Going Down," and the beautifully sad and wistful instrumental, "Definitely Maybe." Beware of early, poor-sounding versions.

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow (1975)

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow (1975)
FLAC: 270 MB | Artwork: 20 MB | MP3: 110 MB | 5% WinRAR Recovery
Year & Label: 1975/2008, Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Legacy

Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck's wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck's fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. Only composer/keyboardist Max Middleton returned from Beck's previous lineups. To Beck's credit, Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton's tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers leaves a soulful imprint. Drummer Richard Bailey is in equal measure supportive and propulsive as he deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters. Much of the album's success is also attributable to the excellent material, which includes Middleton's two originals and two collaborations with Beck, a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's "She's a Woman," and two originals by Stevie Wonder. George Martin's ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck's versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album's focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. One of the album's unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances. On the opening "You Know What I Mean," Beck's stinging, blues-based soloing is full of imaginative shapes and daring leaps. On "Air Blower," elaborate layers of rhythm, duel lead, and solo guitars find their place in the mix. Propelled by the galvanic rhythm section, Beck slashes his way into "Scatterbrain," where a dizzying keyboard and guitar line leads to more energetic soloing from Beck and Middleton. In Stevie Wonder's ballad "Cause We've Ended as Lovers," Beck variously coaxes and unleashes sighs and screams from his guitar in an aching dedication to Roy Buchanan. Middleton's aptly titled "Freeway Jam" best exemplifies the album's loose and fun-loving qualities, with Beck again riding high atop the rhythm section's wave. As with "Scatterbrain," Martin's impeccable string arrangements enhance the subtle harmonic shades of the closing "Diamond Dust." Blow by Blow signaled a new creative peak for Beck, and it proved to be a difficult act to follow. It is a testament to the power of effective collaboration and, given the circumstances, Beck clearly rose to the occasion. In addition to being a personal milestone, Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music.

Jeff Beck - Wired (1976)

Jeff Beck - Wired (1976)
FLAC: 240 MB | Artwork: 26 MB | MP3: 90 MB | 5% WinRAR Recovery
Year & Label: 1976/2008, Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Legacy

Released in 1976, Jeff Beck's Wired contains some of the best jazz-rock fusion of the period. Wired is generally more muscular, albeit less-unique than its predecessor, Blow by Blow. Joining keyboardist Max Middleton, drummer Richard Bailey, and producer George Martin from the Blow by Blow sessions are drummer Narada Michael Walden, bassist Wilbur Bascomb, and keyboardist Jan Hammer. Beck contributed no original material to Wired, instead relying on the considerable talents of his supporting cast. Perhaps this explains why Wired is not as cohesive as Blow by Blow, seemingly more assembled from component parts. Walden's powerful drumming propels much of Wired, particularly Middleton's explosive opener, "Led Boots," where Beck erupts into a stunning solo of volcanic intensity. Walden also contributes four compositions, including the funk-infused "Come Dancing," which adds an unnamed horn section. While Walden's "Sophie" is overly long and marred by Hammer's arena rock cliches, his "Play With Me" is spirited and Hammer's soloing more melodic. Acoustic guitar and piano predominate the closing ballad, "Love Is Green"; Beck's electric solo gracefully massages the quiet timbres. Wired is well balanced by looser, riff-oriented material and Walden's more intricate compositions. Walden and Hammer give Wired a '70s-era jazz-rock flavor that is indicative of their work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Bascomb's throw-down, "Head for Backstage Pass," finds Bailey skillfully navigating the mixed meters while Beck counters with a dazzling, gritty solo. Hammer's "Blue Wind" features an infectious riff over which Beck and Hammer trade heated salvos. As good as "Blue Wind" is, it would have benefited from the Walden/Bascomb rhythm section and a horn arrangement by Martin. One of Wired's finest tracks is an arrangement of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." Beck's playing is particularly alluring: cleanly ringing tones, weeping bends, and sculpted feedback form a resonant palette. Bailey and Middleton lend supple support. Within a two-year span, the twin towers Blow by Blow and Wired set a standard for instrumental rock that even Beck has found difficult to match. On Wired, with first-rate material and collaborators on hand, one of rock's most compelling guitarists is in top form.

Andy Summers and John Etheridge - Invisible Threads (2002)

Andy Summers and John Etheridge - Invisible Threads (2002)
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG |45:21 | 280 MB | Complete HQ Scan
Genre: Fusion / New Age | Label: Favored Nations Acoustic

Andy Summers (born Andrew James Summers, 31 December 1942) is an English guitarist born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, England.[1] Best known as the guitarist for rock band The Police, he has also recorded twelve solo albums, collaborated with many other artists, toured extensively under his own name, published several books, and composed several film scores.
John Etheridge rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as, "One of the best guitarists in the world". He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as 'eclectic' as he refuses to accommodate or even acknowledge artificial musical boundaries. His range is well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with the iconic Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine. John is equally at home on acoustic and electric guitar and his willingness to engage with so many styles is matched by his ability to excel in any of them. He has played with John Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Nigel Kennedy, Pat Metheny, Birelli Lagrene, Barney Kessel, Vic Juris and countless others. John's ability as an outstanding composer is sometimes overlooked but he is often under pressure from audiences to feature more of his own material.

Jazz / Post Bop / Avant-Garde Jazz / Fusion / Piano

Some jazz musicians aren't documented nearly as much as they should be; one could write a book about all the talented improvisers who made it to 60 or 65 without ever recording an album, or even being featured as a sideman on someone else's album. But Hiromi, thankfully, has been recording frequently ever since she emerged in the early 2000s, and she has been wise enough to record in a variety of settings. Hiromi has recorded unaccompanied, as well as in duos and trios; she has played in both electric groups and acoustic groups, and she has provided straight-ahead post-bop as well as fusion.

Voice is best described as an electro-acoustic effort that is more post-bop than fusion but has its rock-influenced moments. Forming a trio with Anthony Jackson on electric bass and Simon Phillips on drums, Hiromi is heard on both acoustic piano and electric keyboards but pays more attention to the former. And while this 2010 recording may not be ideal from the perspective of a rigid jazz purist or a bop snob, Hiromi's outlook is very much the outlook of a jazz improviser; the fact that she, Jackson, and Phillips bring some rock muscle to some of the material doesn't negate that. Hiromi is undeniably imaginative on an intriguing performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C Minus, Opus 13, aka Sonata Pathétique, which goes back to 1798. Or course, there was no jazz in Beethoven's time; if one agrees that jazz started when cornetist Buddy Bolden formed his first band in New Orleans in 1895, then jazz was a little over 100 years away from being created when Beethoven composed Sonata Pathétique. But Hiromi has no problem bringing Beethoven's piece into the jazz world of the 21st century; she is no less an improviser on Sonata Pathétique than she is on free-spirited originals such as "Labyrinth," "Flashback," "Delusion," and "Now or Never." The Hiromi/Jackson/Phillips trio might display more rock muscle on some tracks than they do on others, but rock muscle or not, this 66-minute CD never loses its jazz mentality. Voice is yet another absorbing effort from this capricious acoustic pianist/electric keyboardist.

Contains previoulsy unissued material. Some will say that the Kenton band on live recordings was more relaxed and swung harder.I think this album proves that point. The biggest drawback of live recordings is undoubtably the variable recording quality.Rest assured, that with the Status CD's the music has been lovingly transfered using (what was then) the latest digital equipment transfered from 1st generation masters. Those familiar with "Live at the Tropicana" will know what to expect from this CD.

Art Tatum - God Is In The House (1973) [Remastered 1998]

Art Tatum - God Is In The House (1973) [Remastered 1998]
EAC rip | FLAC + CUE + LOG | Full Scans | 140 Mb (Incl. Recovery)
Genre ~ Boogie-Woogie, Swing, Stride, Piano Jazz

This 1998 HighNote CD reissues a long-out-of-print Art Tatum LP that was put out by the defunct Onyx label in 1973. The live performances are from the Jerry Newman collection of acetate discs and are fortunately in better technical quality than most of the music from Newman's archives. The remarkable Art Tatum is heard playing three brief, unaccompanied piano solos in 1940, three other numbers in which he is accompanied by Reuben Harris (beating out some quiet rhythms with whiskbrooms on a suitcase), and four duets with bassist-vocalist Chocolate Williams; Tatum has a brief vocal on "Knockin' Myself Out" and a more extensive one on "Toledo Blues," the only times he ever sang on record. In addition, Tatum and Williams back Ollie Potter (a pretty good if completely unknown singer) on "There'll Be Some Changes Made." Best of all are a pair of exciting trio numbers ("Lady Be Good" and a very memorable "Sweet Georgia Brown") in which Tatum stretches out with bassist Ebenezer Paul and the great, underrated trumpeter Frankie Newton. It is fascinating to hear Newton's playing on "Sweet Georgia Brown," which is fairly simple and calm, while Tatum sounds like a volcano behind him. Highly recommended.

Chick Corea - Solo Piano Improvisations / Children's Songs (2010)

Chick Corea - Solo Piano Improvisations / Children's Songs (2010)
EAC rip | FLAC + CUE + LOG | Full Scans | 3 CDs | 440 Mb (Incl. Recovery)
Genre ~ Modern Creative, Post-Bop, Piano Jazz

This 2010 ECM collection Solo Piano Improvisations/Children's Songs brings together three of pianist Chick Corea's '70s solo piano recordings. Included are 1971's Piano Improvisations, Vol. 1, 1972's Piano Improvisations, Vol. 2, and 1984's Children's Songs. These reflective, atmospheric, but quite technically agile recordings found Corea exploring and discovering new ways of expressing himself alone at the piano. In that sense, Corea was bucking the electric fusion and avant-garde "free" jazz of the time with these ruminative acoustic sets that influenced much of what was to become the defining sound of ECM. This is a typically well-crafted set from ECM and features new liner notes and period black-and-white photographs of Corea.

Jazz / Hard Bop

A live set by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers recorded in Europe in 1968, Moanin' has been released a couple of previous times by different labels. The music, which features Blakey on drums, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Billy Harper on tenor sax, Ronnie Mathews on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Lawrence Evans on bass, is surprisingly well recorded and it's an energetic and vigorous set with spirited versions of "Slide's Delight" and the title tune.

Mozart: La Clemenza di Tito (Sir Charles Mackerras, Magdalena Kozena) [2006]

Mozart: La Clemenza di Tito (Sir Charles Mackerras, Magdalena Kozena) [2006]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 487.16 MB

Sir Charles Mackerras leads a fine performance of Mozart's last opera seria, a work that should be far better appreciated than it is. Full of dignity and poise, aria follows duet follows aria, fascinatingly scored, and exactly the correct length. The numbers are expressive and filled with the information we need to know these characters. Sesto, a travesty role, is taken by Magdalena Kozena, who follows in the footsteps of Teresa Berganza, Cecilia Bartoli, and Anne Sofie von Otter and proves their equal. Her gorgeous voice and technique shine through. Hillevi Martinpelto's Vitellia is handsomely sung; Christine Rice, sounding much like Kozena, is fine as his friend Annio; Lisa Milne's pretty, silvery tone is just right for Servilia. As Tito, Rainer Trost sings with dignity and accuracy in the character's noble and sometimes very florid music, and John Relyea lends his dark bass to the part of Publio. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is augmented by some period players on brass, and the effect is exciting. This may not be your number-one choice--Hogwood and Bartoli and Gardiner and von Otter are better---but it's an excellent performance nonetheless.

The pre-war Schubert recordings, Edwin Fischer (Impromptus D899 + D935, Wanderer Fantasy D760)

The pre-war Schubert recordings, Edwin Fischer (Impromptus D899 + D935, Wanderer Fantasy D760)
EAC (FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG) | Complete Scans 300/600 dpi | 1CD, 256 MB + 11 MB (.rar)
Classical | Label: Appian Publications & Recordings APR 5515, United Kingdom 1995 (mono)

It's hard to imagine any living pianist offering Schubert at this level, at least consistently...As for sonics, these transfers strike me as a good compromise between the full-toned but scratchy sound of Pearl and the dull, over-filtered quality typical of EMI...Appian wins handily this time.

A Edwin Fischer has a sense of rhythm which is certainly never a metronomic sense of rhythm. His rhythm is unbridled and his freedom space outlined in phrasing. When listening to this version of the "Impromptus", the feeling that his interpretation is truly modern, almost an objective analysis, is the result of a combination of motricity in rhythm and precision in linking the musical phrases.
Edwin Fischer recorded two sets of Franz Schubert's "Impromptus" op. 90 and op. posth. 142, in a single session, at His Master's Voice studios in London on 8th and 9th March 1938. Certain "Impromptus" required several takes, particularly those in C minor, F minor and A-flat minor. However, Fischer always preferred the first version. All through his life, Fischer defended the conviction that music was at its most beautiful on the first day, a conviction unspoilt even by a few errors, inevitable in producing a record with wax, and which precluded editing. He shared this conviction with Cortot who was often said to like his false notes and with Claudio Arrau, gently nicknamed "Mister take one" by the sound engineers.
Regarding textual accuracy, in Artur Schnabel's recording of the same "Impromptus" in 1950 for the same recording company, an even fluctuating technique is used despite the fact that recording methods had made considerable progress. Moreover, Artur Schnabel is far more prolix in recording (but, in our opinion, far less inspired by this music than Fischer).

Gubaidulina - Alleluia; Górecki - Miserere - Op. 44 (Danish Nanional Radio Choir and Symph. Orchestra - D.Kitaenko)

Gubaidulina - Alleluia; Górecki - Miserere - Op. 44 (Danish Nanional Radio Choir and Symph. Orchestra - D.Kitaenko)
EAC Rip | FLAC+CUE+LOG | Covers + Booklet | 345 MB
20th/21st Century Classical - Contemporary | 1997 | Chandos

Sofia Gubaidulina (b. 1931), growing up in the Tatar Republic, bound peculiar fusion of Eastern and Western into dramatic polarities in her later work. She graduated from the Kazan' Conservatory in 1954 having studied composition and piano; she then left for Moscow, where she studied at the Conservatory with Nikolay Peyko until 1959, and then with Shebalin until 1963. Already by this time, Gubaidulina was marked as an "irresponsible" composer on "a mistaken path"; Shostakovich, among others, supported her however, advising her to "continue along [her] mistaken path." Today Gubaidulina is a successful freelance composer, having won a number of prestigious composition prizes and grants.
On this CD also the Miserere by the Polish composer Górecki.

Bernstein - Shostakovich: Symphonies No. 6 & 9 [DVD9]

Bernstein - Shostakovich: Symphonies No. 6 & 9 [DVD9]
Classical | DVD | with complete scans (covers and book) | 7,70 Gb (DVD9) | DVD´s FULL No compression
Audio: PCM Stereo | DTS 5.1

This DVD is a fascinating document of a great conductor and orchestra playing two of the most underrated of Shostakovich's symphonies in 1985 and 1986 concerts in Vienna's Musikverein. In his spoken preface to the Sixth Symphony, Bernstein says he wants to "right a wrong"--the "wrong" being the work's reputation as unstructured lightweight piece. It is an unbalanced work, the opening Largo much longer than the remaining two movements, which can seem as mere appendages. But even at his extremely slow tempo, Bernstein makes it all hang together--the Largo moving in its icy bleakness, the Scherzo a genial joke, the final Presto (taken more as an Allegro and not a fast one at that) an opportunity for the conductor to show off his dance steps. The Haydnesque Ninth, despite idiosyncratically slow tempos is light and humorous, its sardonic touches here relished by Bernstein.
The Vienna Philharmonic isn't the ideal band for Shostakovich but Bernstein makes them play beyond their natural inclinations; here they lack only a bit more vulgarity in the brass and percussion to be fully idiomatic. The net result is a pair of deeply felt, emotionally powerful performances. Director Humphrey Burton's discreet camera work is excellent, with sufficient close-ups of the conductor and plenty of section shots interwoven with close-ups of solo players to help draw attention to key musical strands.
Extras include Bernstein's cogent spoken prefaces to the works.
